Ecotoxicity of polymer microparticles produced by accelerated degradation of nanofibrous layers

  • Annotation in Czech

The global production of plastic has surged dramatically since the introduction of Bakelite in 1909, with annual production reaching 400 million metric tons in 2021 and expected to continue rising. As plastic waste accumulates, understanding its degradation and impact on the environment becomes crucial. This project aims to investigate the accelerated degradation of fibrous polymeric materials, leading to the formation of nano- and microfibrous particles. These particles will undergo comprehensive morphological and physicochemical analysis to determine their structural changes, chemical behavior, and environmental fate. Furthermore, their biological impact will be evaluated through in vitro cytotoxicity tests on tissue culture cells and ecotoxicity assessments using aquatic model organisms, including green algae and the planktonic crustacean Daphnia magna. This study seeks to provide valuable insights into the degradation pathways of fibrous materials and their potential risks to human health and ecosystems.
