    Untangling the phylogeny and evolution of Pentastomida, parasites of vertebrates

    This project offers new insights into arthropod phylogeny and evolution of parasites by deepening our understanding of evolution in Pentastomida. Pentastomids are little studied parasites with arthropod origin and unique life style infecting vertebrates such as snakes, crocodiles, dogs, but also humans. However, we see a discrepancy between fossil record and molecular phylogenetic analysis. Proposed timed phylogenetic tree including Pentastomida will shed light on arthropod early evolution and origin of parasitism in the crustacean lineage. Adaptation to parasitism will be explored through comparative genomics and analysis of host switches with the help of new genomic resources and species distribution database (pentastomiDB), which would also provide information for molecular diagnostics and epidemiology of infections. Together, investigation of pentastomid parasites will significantly improve our understanding of parasitic life strategies and evolution of Arthropoda.
