The unveiling of new morphological characters is a key aspect of reconstructing the evolutionary pathways of organisms. The project aims to identify new diagnostic characters in the postcranial skeleton of turtles, focusing on long bones, which have been underestimated as phylogenetically informative elements for decades. A series of morphometric, statistical, and phylogenetic analyses is planned to obtain new characters allowing reconstruction of the evolutionary tree of turtles. Additionally, 3D models of digitized specimens will be shared following the open science approach to make them available to other scientists and the public. Thanks to our results, we will be able to identify fossil specimens, which have been unstudied since their discovery. We plan to study fossil material housed in three collections in Vienna to reveal the unknown natural history treasures of the former Austro-Hungarian Empire. Based on the study of extant and fossil specimens, the research will show phylogenetic relationships essential for understanding of turtle evolution.
