Investigation of Catalytic Processes using Inverse Model Catalysts

Project goals

Preparation of inverse model catalysts ? nanoparticles of reducible oxides on the surface of metal single crystals. Characterization of morphology, electron structure, stoichiometry, and oxidation state of inverse catalysts. Determining chemical reactivity and selectivity of inverse model catalysts. Determining the influence of morphology and electron structure of inverse catalysts on their reactivity and selectivity. Theoretical investigations if the metal-oxide interaction and description of metal-oxide interface in model catalysts.

Growth of inverse ceria catalysts on Cu and Ru was investigated. Discontinuous ceria layers on Cu(111) have been used as inverse catalyst for water-gas shift reaction and methanol and CO oxidation reactions. The results contributed to elucidation of cerium oxide interaction with Ni and Cu.Ab-initio calculations allowed us to trace back the distinct properties of the first ceria monolayer.
