Search for new sources of valuable and biologically active carotenoids in rarely used plant species.
Project goals
The intended contribution of our team to the COST Action CA15136 is search for new sources of carotenoids, or sources of carotenoids of interests, identification of carotenoids with biological activity, and identification of appropriate in vitro technologies for the sustainable production of carotenoids from the plant biomass.

Project name in Czech
Hledání nových zdrojů biologicky aktivních karotenoidů z méně známých rostlinných druhů.
Annotation in Czech
Cílem projektu je zjistit informace o nutričním potenciálu co nejvíce druhů kapradin rostoucích v našich klimatických podmínkách. Projekt bude zaměřen zejména na obsah α a γ-tokoferolu, α a β-karotenu, xantofylových pigmentů, kyseliny askorbové a mastných kyselin. Dalším cílem bude stanovení biologické aktivity získaných druhů kapradin, zejména antioxidační kapacitu a schopnost testovaných vzorků inhibovat prozánětlivé enzymy cyklooxygenázu-1 (COX-1), cyklooxygenázu-2 (COX-2) a 5-lipoxygenázu (5-LOX). Dalším důležitým cílem projektu bude mikropropagace vybraných (přednostně ohrožených) druhů kapradin pomocí in vitro kultivační technologie rostlinných tkáňových kultur.

Project results evaluation
The results of the project prove that ferns are suitable alternative green leave vegetable. Ferns are important source of antioxidants, have a comparable content of vitamin C with other green leave vegetable, and have a favourable proportion of polyunsaturated fatty acids. Ferns are also a promising source of selective COX-1 inhibitors and anticancer agents.
