Protein mutations allow constructing system capable of photoinduced electron transfer over distances exceeding 20 A, which occurs intramolecularly or across molecular boundaries in protein complexes. Electronic interaction between the photosensitizer andtryptophan residues is the crucial factor enabling ultrafast electron transfer. A possibility to design protein-based photocatalysts emerges.
