Isolation and identification of biologically active organic compounds from mechanically activated Slovak brown coal
Project goals
The aim of this project is a detailed characterization of terpene hydrocarbons from Slovak brown coal and development of procedures for their isolation. Slovak coal contains considerable amounts of diterpenes that could be potentially used as precursorsfor drug synthesis. Modern mechanochemical and extraction procedures will be optimized to obtain the compounds. Their structure and properties will be studied using chromatographic and spectral methods.

Project name in Czech
Izolace a identifikace biologicky aktivních organických látek z mechanicky aktivovaného slovenského hnědého uhlí
Annotation in Czech
Struktura a vlastnosti takto získaných sloučenin bude studována pomocí chromatografických a spektrálních metod.

Project results evaluation
Tetracyclic diterpene 16alfa(H)-phyllocladane was identified in brown coal from Handlová. The compound exhibits weak antimicrobial and cytotoxic activity. The extraction and isolation procedures were optimized.
