Amino-acid residues involved in the substrate specificity and activity of the yeast Nha1/Sod2-22 antiporters are localized in transmembrane segments 4,5 and 11, and in the hydrophilic C-terminus in the close vicinity and contribute to the binding and transport of cations and protons. Our results contribute to the understanding of maintenance of cation and pH homeostases in lov/er eukaryotes.
