Damage detection by laser shearography in carbon/epoxy structures: a business jet fuselage and a wing box

  • Original language description

In the framework of the EU program ALCAS (Advanced Low-Cost Aircraft Structure), its project participants aimed at improving performance and decreasing weight of an aircraft structure by using composite materials. Several demonstrators of business jet structures were manufactured including a composite wing box and a rear part of a business jet fuselage. Besides full-scale tests of strength and stiffness carried out in the VZLU, damage detection and its growth using various NDTs (non-destructive techniques) were assessed. The paper presents a study on damage detection performed in the VZLU using the laser shearography method. Shearography is a rapid method for detection of any near surface damage. The surface heterogeneity can prove some inner structural damage such as a disbond or a delamination. In comparison to an ultrasonic probe, artificial disbonds in the fuselage core structure and delaminations in the skin caused by impacting were detected with more precision and rapidity.
