NDI aspects of aircraft lifetime extension by changing Safe Life to Damage Tolerance philosophy

  • Original language description

The paper addresses the assessment of detectable cracks by non-destructive inspection methods during the lifetime extension process of ageing metallic commuter aircrafts. Almost all of the ageing commuter aircrafts were certified in compliance with Safe-Life (SL) philosophy many years ago. The requirement for extending the lifetimes of these metallic airframes is topical; therefore, most of the airframes certified as SL structures are at the end of their lifetimes. The Damage Tolerance (DT) philosophy seems to be the only method for service lifetime extension of these ageing aircraft structures. However, application of the DT philosophy induces some relevant additional demands that have not been previously considered. This report describes a few basicapproaches and problems associated with the application of the DT philosophy to ageing airframe structures and the work that has to be completed during the lifetime extension certification process from a non-destructive inspection point o
