Evaluation of potential improvements in NO2 and ozone annual mapping

  • Original language description

The report is the ETC/ATNI Working Paper. It examines two potential improvements of the RIMM mapping methodology used for the regular annual air quality mapping. For the NO2 mapping, it examines the use of the Sentinal-5P satellite data in the mapping, instead of the OMNO2 satellite data. For the ozone mapping, annual aggregation of the hourly maps (based on hourly data) is examined and compared with the current regular maps created based on the annual data. As a result of the performed examination, we recommend to apply the Sentinel-5P satellite data in the routine NO2 mapping methodology. However, we also recommend to check for the 2019 data, during the routine map preparation, that the variant using the Sentinel-5P data gives better results compared to the variant using the OMNO2 data also for this year. Based on the results of the analysis, it is not recommended to apply the methodology based on the aggregation of the hourly ozone maps. Next to this, it is recommended to perform the uncertainty analysis of the hourly maps routinely prepared for the POD mapping and ideally, to calculate the POD for measured and cross-validated values at the points of the stations (next to the gridded data). This would enable to see whether and if so, how large effect do have a slight underestimation of rural ozone maps to the POD estimations. Next to this, it can be stated that more dense station coverage in the area of the Balkan countries and Turkey is welcome.
