Original language description
Many polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), along with their nitrated (NPAHs) and oxygenated (OPAHs) derivatives, are toxic and ecotoxic compounds. NPAHs and OPAHs are co-emitted with PAHs from fossil fuel and biomass combustion processes, or formed through photochemical and microbiological reactions of PAHs in air and soil.[1-2] Hopanes, a class of pentacyclic triterpenes, are additional organic contaminants of the atmosphere emitted from anthropogenic activities and used as molecular markers for fossil fuel combustion, indicating traffic-related pollution and emissions from coal combustion.[4-5]
