Reaction of fir and spruce needles to the opening of birch canopy in two-phase forest regeneration
Original language description
The paper evaluates morphological, physiological, and chemical changes of needles of silver fir (Abies alba) and Norway spruce (Picea abies) plantings growing in different conditions of the nurse stand after its reduction. The study shows that: 1) Unlike spruce, fir seedlings showed (even limited) morphological modification of the new needles already first year after release of the nurse stand; 2) Already first year after release, to the intensive opening of the canopy both species reacted by changes of nutrient content in needles. Spruce needle chemistry was more sensitive to slight canopy opening than fir; 3) Physiological adaptation of new needles of spruce to the opening of the canopy in nurse stand of birch seem to be quicker than of fir: difference in Fv/Fm was observed already first summer after release; 4) In spring of the second year after release, one year old needles of both species were adapted to the new light/thermal conditions of the nurse stand.
