Freshwater mussels (naiades) are ecologically important as primary consumers and detritivores. Dense mussel populations can reduce the seston load of water and thus modify ecosystem-scale fluxes of matter (PUSCH et al. 2001, STRAYER 1999, VAUGHN et al. 2004). Also, the aspects of nature conservation have recently become very important as most of the species is seriously threatened. We conducted a long term water quality monitoring program and surveyed streams for mussels with the aim of identifying therequirements of these species and of discussing the effectiveness of conservation strategies in protected areas of the Czech Republic.
