The 2018 European Heart Rhythm Association Practical Guide on the use of non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants in patients with atrial fibrillation : Summary of the document prepared by the Czech Society of Cardiology

  • Original language description

Non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants have an improved efficacy/safety ratio, a predictable anticoagulant effect without need for routine coagulation monitoring, and fewer food and drug interactions compared with VKAs. However, the proper use of NOACs requires a carefully considered approach to many practical aspects. Knowledge of kidney function is required, since all NOACs have precautions and contraindications based on creatinine clearance (CrCl). Also, product characteristics (as explained in the SmPCs), patient-related clinical factors, and patient preference need to be taken into account.
