Pancreatic islet transplantation is limited by the avail-ability of organs suitable for isolating a sufficient number of high-qualityislets. With appropriate therapeutic intervention, it may be possible to utilizeadditional, so-called marginal pancreases for islet transplantation. Tissuesfrom aged donors, often affected by inflammation, brain death dysregu-lation, and preservation stress, contain significant amounts of senescentcells that impair effective regeneration. Treating the donor or isolated isletsin vitro with a suitable senolytic drug could improve tissue quality and ena-ble successful islet isolation from currently unsuitable pancreases.
