The recently rediscovered glass plate negatives of unique skeletal fossil material from Předmostí - the age estimates for which range from 25-27,000 years, and which were destroyed during World War II - were studied by means of geometric morphometrics. The aim of this study was to determine the sexual shape variability of the best preserved skulls of adult individuals, using methods of statistical shape analysis. While the results roughly support Matiegka´s sex estimation, skull 1 (Matiegka´s female) ismore similar to males. The differences between the skulls of the Předmostí specimens are more striking in the lateral, frontal and vertical views, whereas inter-sexual differences affect the non-affine parts of changes in vertical, lateral and basal views in particular. The areas of the metopion, glabella, auriculare, porion, asterion, gnathion and opisthocranion landmarks present more striking variations, i.e. those with more discriminatory power.

Vyhodnocení sexuálního dimorfismu lebek z Předmostí pomocí geometrické morfometrie (svrchní paleolit, Česká republika)

Czech description

Znovuobjevená kolekce skleněných negativů fosilních lidských pozůstatků z Předmostí u Přerova (27 - 25 000 př.n.l.) zničených za druhé světové války byla studována pomocí geometrické morfometrie. Cílem studie bylo srovnání tvarové variability obou pohlaví za pomoci metody statistické analýzy tvaru. Využity byly pouze nejlépe dochované lebky dospělých jedinců. Ve srovnání s určením Matiegky (1934, 1938) vykazovala lebka jedince označovaného jako Předmostí I znaky spíše mužského pohlaví. Odlišnosti mezi lebkami jedinců z Předmostí jsou více zřetelné v laterální, frontální a vertikální normě. Oblasti landmarků - metopionu, galbelly, auriculare, porionu, asterionu, gnathionu a opistocranionu - vykazují nápadnější rozdíly, tj. mají větší diskriminační sílu
