Embryonic shells in some lechritrochoceratids (Nautiloidea, Barrandeocerina)
Original language description
Knowledge on the early ontogeny of lechritrochoceratids (Tarphycerida, Barrandeocerina), possible ancestors of Nautilida, is extended expanded. The outer morphology of the embryonic shell in Kosovoceras sandbergeri (Barrande, 1865), Peismoceras pulchrum(Barrande 1865), Calocyrtoceras cognatum (Barrande, 1866) and C. simulans (Barrande, 1865) is described; the systematic position of Calocyrtoceras within this group is substantiated. Common features of these nautiloids are cyrtocone shells, a bowl-shapedblunt apex, the absence of nepionic constriction and a reticulate sculpture with dominating longitudinal lirae. The appearance of annuli on the surface is interpreted as the beginning of post-hatching phase. The embryonic shell of the Silurian tarphycerid Boionautilus bohemicus (Barrande, 1865) from the family Uranoceratidae is discussed for a comparison.
