Proposal to conserve Steinhauera C. Presl (Spermatophyta) against Steinhauera Göpp. (fossil Monilophyta)

  • Original language description

The globular reproductive structure of Steinhauera was initially designated by C. Presl (in Sternberg. Vers. Fl. Vorwelt as an ovuliferous cone of the Pinaceae from the Eocene of the Czech Republic. Its type, S. subglobosa, was formally designated by Andrews. Steinhauera Göpp. is based on Steinhauera sternbergii Göpp., which represents a fragment of a fern frond from the Carboniferous of Silesia. Steinhauera. Göppert faded into oblivion soon after its publication and has remained there until now. However, as its diagnosis in the summaries of Göppert's presentation was published it means that Steinhauera Göpp. is a validly published name by the provision of a diagnosis generico-specifica. It predates Presl's name by three years. The name Steinhauera C. Presl and its type S. subglobosa C. Presl are currently in use, and have been so since 1838. Hence, conservation of Steinhauera C. Presl against Steinhauera Göpp. is proposed to prevent the loss of a widely accepted generic name.
