  • Original language description

In the current contexts of development and state of the Anthropocene, ecological sustainability of freshwater ecosystems cannot be dissociated from socio-economic challenges and therefore entails policy framework, planning, and man-agement. The general purpose of this chapter is to underline the fish resources of inland waters and fisheries in Albania, the key issues related to fishery, and associ-ated problems within management, sustainability, and conservation. The total fish caught covering all fishing categories for the year 2020 was assessed at value of 16,892 tonnes, while the fisheries of inland waters at 2844 tonnes. In all planning and strategic documents, the inland fisheries are recognized as important to food security, livelihoods, and human well-being, but there is a poor integration in local planning and development practices. An ecosystem-based approach may help that inland fisheries be better evaluated and recognized in broader natural and water resource planning, and decision-making frameworks, enhancing their value and sustainability for the future. This chapter and current results presented here show that inland waters resources are subject to numerous anthropogenic interventions.
