The use of metallic bismuth in a red poliment in Late Gothic painting and sculpture polychromy ? results of an interdisciplinary material study of the altarpiece in the chapel at Křivoklát Castle

  • Original language description

This paper presents a material study of the altarpiece in the chapel at Krivoklat Castle (around 1480-1490). An initial investigation of the gilded and silvered parts of the paintings, sculptures and architectural decor of the altarpiece was undertaken using a portable X-ray fluorescence analyser, without taking any samples. Not only the expected metallic elements gold and silver were identified, but also bismuth. This result led on to a complex study of the altarpiece, focused on the layered structureand the method by which bismuth was applied to metal-coated areas. Our paper deals with a rare technique, i.e. the use of bismuth in red poliment and its re-plating with gold and silver leaf. The micro-samples were analysed with optical and electron microscopy, EDS micro-analysis, powder micro-XRD and micro-XRF. The quantitative element mapping on the cross-section of a micro-sample with gilding showed distributions of several elements (Bi, Au, Fe, Al, Ca); thus the presence of bismuth g
