Sada Yakko and the reception of Japanese theater in the context of Czech Japonisme
Original language description
Within the stream of foreign cultural inspirations, when we focus on the arts in Central Europe from the late 19th century towards the end of the 1920s, we find a great impact of the perception of Japanese aesthetic beauty represented by images of the geisha. The aura of an exotic beauty embodied in the perception of a Japanese feminine object inspired the visual and literary artists of this period. In literature, where the exotic aura of Japan was first represented, the genre of fantasy romance set in a Japanese environment emerged. Japan inspired fiction was viewed as an “aesthetic escape” from reality to exoticism, which can be traced in the works of writers, poets as well as visual artists in the Czech lands.
