Original language description
The book presents the Biedermeier art in the Bohemian Lands and examines the character of Biedermeier as both the lifestyle as well as artistic style that was created by aristocracy and wealthy bourgeoisie. Characteristic features of Biedermeier - the restrained elegance and straightforwardness - echoed the general modernisation of society and had come to embody the foreshadowing of modern design and visual arts. The publication analyses the social and ideological roots of Biedermeier, its philosophy, literary works, special attention is devoted to applied arts (furniture, Bohemian glass and porcelain, fashion) as well as painting and graphic arts. The second, catalogue section includes over 650 colour reproductions of exhibits with short annotations divided into several portions that follow the theme of home, elegant simplicity of the new style, iconography of family virtues, inspiration by urban life as well as the cult of nature and natural materials.
