The Idealized Image and Reality: Biedermeier in Bohemia after 1830
Original language description
The chapter of the book examines the development of art in Bohemia from 1830–1860 – a period which begins in the age of Biedermeier but extends well beyond it. The text concentrates on siginificant works in particular by showing the wide range of painting of the period (through portraits, landscapes and genre pictures) and observes an increase in idealizing tendencies in the works of Bohemian painters. The image of an idyllic world in Biedermeier art and literature has been combined with a sensitive interest in a realistic depiction of nature and life. The empirical, objective description was no trivial Naturalism, but had an ideal dimension and led to a synthesis of visible reality and hidden meaning. The main focus lies on Bohemian painters like Antonín Machek, Antonín Mánes, August Piepenhagen, Josef Navrátil, Bedřich Havránek and Quido Mánes.
