The text introduces the methodological aspects of of the first comprehensive publication on design in the Czech lands in the 20th century. The methodology is based on the concept of the institution of Maurice Hauriou, a French sociologist, and the French philosophical school, especially Michel Foucault and Gilles Deleuze. According to this conception, an institution is understood as an ideological dynamic system which makes it possible to grasp the institutions of design in their diversity, disciplinary scope, national destination, and to highlight the role of important agents as producers, clients, schools, groups and users.
