Nucleolar and cytoplasmic RNA density-concentration in leukemia granulocytic progenitors in human bone marrow biopsies: a short cytochemical note

  • Original language description

In contrast to erythroblasts, similar concentration in nucleoli and cytoplasm was noted only in early stages of the granulocytic differentiation and maturation. In more advanced differentiation and maturation stages the RNA concentration in the cytoplasmdecreased more rapidly than in the nucleolus. Therefore, the ratio of the nucleolar to cytoplasmic RNA density was increased in more advanced stages of the granulocytic development. Since the nucleolar size markedly decreases during the granulocytic differentiation in contrast to the more stable nucleolar RNA concentration, the total nucleolar RNA content apparently depends rather on the nucleolar size than RNA concentration.
