Notes to the light microscopic morphology of the nucleolus in progenitors and mature cells of human leukemic granulocytic lineage
Original language description
The leukemic granulocytic cell lineage represents a very convenient model for studies on the nucleolar morphology in progenitor or mature cells. Diagnostic peripheral blood and bone marrow smears of patients suffering from chronic myelocytic leukemia possessed a satisfactory number of cells in early as well as advanced differentiation and maturation steps that were easily identified. Moreover, granulocytic progenitors were also cultured in established cell cultures originated from leukemic patients. Simple methods for the RNA visualization facilitated to visualize not only large but also very small nucleoli. Sites of the nucleolar RNA transcription - nucleolar fibrillar centers - in single cells were visualized by cytochemical reactions for main nucleolar proteins
