Effects of haloperidol on locomotion in animal model of schizophrenia induced by MK-801
Original language description
Haloperidol is a potent D2 antagonist, belonging to the so-called group of typical antipsychotics. It is effectively used in the treatment of schizophrenia. In our experimental setting we have evaluated the effects of haloperidol on psychosis-like reaction induced by non-competitive NMDA glutamate receptor antagonist, MK-801. We have monitored the locomotor reaction of rats in the open field, whereas we have targeted to evaluate the effects of haloperidol on hyperlocomotion induced by MK-801. We have found that MK-801 induced hyperolocomotor reaction was efficiently diminished by administration of haloperidol in a dose dependent manner. In our experimental setting we conclude that haloperidol was effective in counteracting MK-801 induced hyperlocomotion. Inasmuch as this model serves as a model of psychosis, we can extrapolate that haloperidol has an antipsychotic effect.
