Calcium dyshomeostasis in the course of disease in individual patients with Alzheimer´s dementia

  • Original language description

Destabilization of intracellular calcium homeostasis in neurons has been implicated in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer´s dementia (AD). In this study the disturbed calcium homeostasis was examined in platelets of AD patients during the course of the disease and on individual basis. There were no significant differences in calcium homeostasis between mild, moderate and severe stages of AD (n=46), but significant changes were found in all AD stages compared to age-matched nondemented control subjects (n=18). In individual, long term monitored AD patients, the percentage of increase in platelet free intracellular calcium level, in the presence of 1mM calcium in the incubation medium above the basal value, decreased with the progression of the disease in allcases (n=6).
