Relationships of flow experience, well-being and achievement motivation in recreational athletes in two countries
Original language description
The study joins the research topics of health psychology, positive psychology, and sports psychology. The aim of the study is to explore the interrelations of the Flow experience, well-being and motivation in recreational athletes, the clients of indoor cycling program, Spinning. The research sample consists of 101 respondents of two national groups, Czech and Slovak clients of Spinning program. Tools used included FSS questionnaire (Jackson, Marsh, 1996), QAM (Pardel et al., 1987), Happiness Measures (Fordyce, 1988), modified QSDI (Mainhard et al., 2009) and The Scale of Subjective Feelings of Fatigue (Grandjean, 1968). Results revealed significant correlations between specific Flow dimensions and the level of Achievement Motivation and its subscales. In the Czech sample Achievement motivation correlates with three Flow dimensions, i.e. ‘Clear Goals’ (r = 0.39, p < 0.01), ‘Transformation of Time’ (r = 0.27, p < 0.05) and ‘Action-Awareness Merging’ (r = 0.28, p < 0.05) and the scale of Anxiety inhibiting performance is related to the ‘Transformation of Time’ (r = 0.35, p < 0.01). In the Slovak sample, the Flow dimension ‘Action-Awareness Merging’ correlates both with the Achievement Motivation (r = 0.43, p < 0.01) and the Anxiety supporting performance scale (r = 0.35, p < 0.05). Further, significant changes in level of emotional and physical well-being were observed, for both groups, before and after the sessions (t = 9.41, p < 0.01). The implications and application of findings in programs promoting physical and mental health and well-being are suggested.
