Original language description

This article reviews the potential dual role of monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) in the treatment of castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC) and the comorbid depression often seen in patients with CRPC. It examines the complex interactions between various cellular and neuroendocrine pathways, with particular emphasis on the intertwined roles of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, androgenic hormones and their receptors in the development of both disorders. The text also emphasises the need for rigorous research to understand the complex relationship between MAOIs, CRPC and comorbid depression, and to investigate common biomarkers of the two conditions. Such findings may shed light on the potential therapeutic efficacy of MAOIs in the treatment of CRPC patients with comorbid depression.
