During 2/96- 10/03 30 patients with craniofaryngioma were treated by stereotactic with stereotactic minimally invasive methods in our department at Na Homolce Hospital and were subsequently monitored for at least 8 years. The solid part of the craniopharyngioma was treated using gama knife radiosurgery, the cystic parts of the tumor were treated by stereotactic aspiration or intracavitary brachytherapy. This group of patients was comprised of 16 women and 14 men with an age range of 7-73 (median 35,5) years. The minimal marginal dose was in the range 12 - 35 Gy (median 17,25) Gy, the median tumor volume was 4,2 cm3. The follow up evaluation was between 1-158 (median 91) months after treatment. Twenty seven patients showed clinical improvement, the clinical state of three patients worsened and they died as a result of tumor progression. Post-radiation follow up imaging showed a reduction in tumor size in twenty patients (67%) and no further tumor growth in 7 patients (23%). Two patients were found to have a larger tumor (6,7%). In case that the craniofaryngioma can not be completely surgically resolved there are other treatment modalities including stereotactic radiosurgery that have to be taken into consideration.
