The geochemical model MAGIC was applied to estimate streamwater and soil chemistry between 1851-2030 at the Lysina and Pluhův Bor catchments in the western Czech Republic. These two sites represent interesting geochemical end-members of ecosystem sensitivity to acidification (acid-sensitive granitic Lysina vs. acid-resistant serpentinitic Pluhuv Bor). Although the total deposition of sulfur declined by 75% between 1990 and 2002, the acidification recovery was relatively small within the period 1990-2002at Lysina. Streamwater pH increased from 3.92 to 4.07 only. Contrary to Lysina, pH change was not observed at Pluhuv Bor (pH varied between 6.9-7.3). The most pronounced diffence between the catchments which causes such tremedous difference in responseto acid deposition is weatherig rate. Base cations weathering was estimated to be only 62 meq/m2/yr at Lysina compared to 241 meq/m2/yr at Pluhuv Bor.
