Original language description
Volcanism in the area was controlled by intersection of three tectonic structures: Central Graben, Comayagua Graben and Guayape Fault Zone. The basement is built of rhyolitic Playitas ignimbrite. The pyroclastic rocks of La Unión unit (13.3 Ma) display signs of mingling between basalt and dacite. Rocks of the subsequent Pozo unit are strongly altered. Pilón Lavas are dominated by andesite and basaltic andesite. Pleistocene volcanic activity is represented by the Pre-Conchagua edifice (1.6 Ma), Cerro Montoso and Juana-Pancha. Some lavas of the Pre-Conchagua ? Juana-Pancha are compositionally distinct from common volcanic front products, resembling the lavas of Tegucigalpa volcanic field. Behind-arc extension could have facilitated the magma genesis viadecompression melting of the mantle. The current Conchagua Volcano is built by repeated Strombolian eruptions associated with basaltic lavas.
