Crystal chemistry of the natural uranyl carbonate mineral grimselite, (K, Na)3Na[(UO2)(CO3)3](H2O), from Jáchymov, Czech Republic

  • Original language description

Crystals of uranyl carbonate mineral grimselite, ideally K3Na[(UO2)(CO3)3](H2O), from Jáchymov, Czech Republic were studied by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and electron probe microanalysis. The unit cell parameters for grimselite are (for hexagonal space group P?62/c) a = 9.2507(1), c = 8.1788(1) ? with unit cell volume V = 606.14(3) ?3, Z = 2. Crystal structure was refined from the high-quality collected data to final R1 = 0.0082, wR1 = 0.0185 with GOF = 1.33 based on 626 observed diffractions [Iobs>3?(I)]. Entering of Na atom into KO8 polyhedra, which are located in the channel-voids within grimselite crystal structure, results in decrease of polyhedral and consequently unit-cell volume due to smaller ionic radius of sodium compared to potassium.According to structure refinement, chemical composition of (K, Na) grimselite from Jáchymov is (K2.43Na0.57)?3.00Na[(UO2)(CO3)3](H2O), Z = 2.
