    The filling Teplice Rhyolite (TR) deposits of the Post-Variscan Altenberg-Teplice Caldera (Central European Variscides) were investigated by means of petrography, facies analysis, whole-rock chemistry, and U/Pb zircon dating. The aim of this work was to reevaluate, interpret, and unify preexisting and unrelated TR litho-types, as well as to render time constraints on the onset of the volcanism in the eastern Erzgebirge. The lithofacies scheme consists of rhyolitic lava facies associations, lithic-rich, eutaxitic, and crystal-rich ignimbrites, along with a non-initial fallout deposit, reworked sedimentary layers, and rhyodacitic to rhyolitic, very crystal-rich ignimbrites. Lithofacies revealed lateral and vertical variations in size, type, and abundance of volcanic components during eruption, which may have occurred through fissure vents. The massive and poorly sorted ignimbrites were deposited from granular fluid-based pyroclastic density currents with fluid escape- and, possibly, granular flow-dominated flow-boundary zones. The TR displays deformed glass shards, spherulites, microcrystalline to granophyric textures, and columnar joints among other indicators consistent with hot emplacement. Ignimbrites are partially to densely welded. Rocks have a general rhyolitic composition and a chemical normal zoning with high-K calc-alkaline character and A-type granite affinities. Early emplacement of ignimbrites and lavas intercalated with reworked sedimentary material and a pumice fallout layer indicates a succession of discrete pyroclastic flows and lavas with short time breaks of deposition. Late eruption of the rhyolitic, very crystal-rich ignimbrites marked the start of a waxing to quasi-steady current episode. The TR represents a relatively long-lived volcanic phenomenon with a more or less sustained, unsteady to quasi-steady current, assembled in a stepwise process. The TR ignimbrite lithofacies are consistent with a low-column, boiling-over eruption style with alternating stages of effusive eruption of lavas. The complex was interpreted as a volcano-tectonic caldera with piece-meal subsidence in the northern part but a general trap-door collapse style. U/Pb zircon ages of 324.8 ± 1.5 Ma, 318 ± 4 Ma, 313 ± 3 Ma, 312 ± 4, and a single-grain core age of 313 ± 5 Ma and 304 ± 5 Ma for the rim were compared to age data of other caldera units and suggest volcanic activity from ~325-317 Ma.
