Calcareous nannofossils and foraminifera from the Upper Cretaceous of the Central Balkan Mts (Central Bulgaria)

  • Original language description

Upper Cretaceous sediments in the Central Balkan Mts of Bulgaria offer valuable insights into the region's late Mesozoic evolution. This study examines the preservation and taxonomic diversity of calcareous nannofloras and foraminiferal microfaunas from the Mountaineers' Memorial Section, which comprises the Bazov Dyal, Darmantsi, Kunino and Mezdra formations. Preliminary results suggest that the sediments span the upper Campanian-basal upper Maastrichtian interval. The Bazov Dyal Formation is tentatively dated as late Campanian, while the Darmantsi Formation ranges from the upper Campanian? to the lower Maastrichtian. The Kunino Formation is interpreted as early Maastrichtian in age. Planktonic foraminifera from the uppermost levels of the Mezdra Formation indicate the presence of the lowermost upper Maastrichtian. However, poor preservation, poten-tial reworking and low taxonomic diversity in certain levels hamper precise biostratigraphic interpretations. Further studies are needed to refine the age of these formations.
