Termination of innate seed dormancy in Rumex obtusifolius under field conditions.
Original language description
Achenes of Rumex obtusifolius persist on dry shoots from maturation through the next vegetative season and are continuously dispersed. The rate of dormancy termination in seeds dispersed from mother plants at different times and buried in the soil was investigated. The seeds were buried in the field at 20 cm depth on nine dates between April 15 and September 20. Samples of seeds were exhumed in 10-d intervals and the proportion of germinating seeds was determined at 25 C in light. Regardles of the time of burial, dormancy was terminated quickly. Withi 30 d after burial, the percentageof germination increased from the original 8-33 % to 64-85 %. The rate of increase of germination within 20 d after burial (2.1-3.1 % per day) did not significantly differ between dates, although average soil temperatures were different. Achenes buried in the autumn pass through annual dormancy cycles, but achenes from dry shoots become germinable all year round after a shor period of burial.
