The Detection of Genetically Modified Organisms: An Overview
Original language description
Although the precise details of these frameworks vary from region to region, almost everywhere a scientific approach is being used to evaluate the safety of GM products. Some countries (EU member states, Japan) require the labeling of GM products, and prescribe strict control mechanisms for GMO identification. This has led to the development, testing and validation of methods capable of meeting such requirements. Having been validated in collaborative trials and, subsequently, issued as international standards, polymerase chain reaction-based (PCR-based) methods are currently those most commonly used for GMO detection. However, with the increasing number of GMOs in the environment, new approaches are needed that enable multiple approved GMOs to be detected simultaneously with the presence of unapproved GMOs. The development of such methods constitutes the main challenge for the future, and, therefore, the focus of current research.
