Methods for detecting genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are essential for establishing an effective system for traceability all along the supply chain from seed producers to final consumers. Generally GMOs may be identified taking into account theirnew properties. Oil content and composition, modified starches or fibers can be detected by HPLC, MALDI TOF, NMR or nanotech based techniques. More often inserted DNAs and corresponding proteins are used as analytical targets and detected by PCR. ELISA (Enzyme-Linked Immuno Sorbent Assay) is widely used for known proteins assessment.While GM microorganisms are generally used for the large-scale production of various pharmaceuticals or food/feed additives and GM plant have found their places in plant production, transgenic animals are still waiting for wider commercial use.
