Breeding for enhanced drought resistance in barley and wheat - drought-associated traits, genetic resources and their potential utilization in breeding programmes
Original language description
A review manuscript provides an overview of recent literature dealing with the problem of drought resistance and breeding for an improvement of drought resistance in wheat and barley. Drought resistance in cereals is a complex phenomenon which is dependent on timing and severity of the stress. Key characteristics lie in reaching a balance between plant water uptake and water release, mainly through transpiration, which affect stomatal openness and CO2 availability in C3 plants including wheat and barley. Genetic resources of drought resistance and breeding strategies which could be applied to reach an enhanced drought resistance are discussed.
