Achieved parameter changes in Czech and Slovak winter wheat cultivars (Triticum aestivum L.) during 90 years of breeding
Original language description
The breeding process unambiguously improved yield parameters of cultivars, powdery mildew resistance and limited lodging of plants. In spite of the shortening of maturing period in modern cultivars, their grain-filling period was significantly longer. We confirmed the negative breeding effect on the level and stability of baking parameters (crude protein, Zeleny sedimentation) compared to old wheat landraces. The most significant impact on parameters changes showed the breeding period 1961 – 1990, especially in case of varieties developed after 1970. It was caused by higher introduction of the foreign cultivars for breeding. Some cultivars developed in this period could also be a suitable as initial genetic sources for breeding of intensive and environmentally resistant cultivars because of their acceptable yield and parameter stability (see Regina and Diana II).
