Low temperature to control pests and resistance

  • Original language description

Low temperatures are commonly used for control of pests and safe storage of commodities, processed food, or feed products. The minimal temperature needed for insect or mite pest species development of "Lower temperature Threshold Development" (LDT). At these thresholds, the pests stop multiplying and at longer exposure these temperatures are even lethal. For stored product and food industry practitioners, a knowledge of pest thermal requirements, in particular threshold temperatures at which development and other activities of a particular pest species cease, is of crucial importance. Pests originating in the tropics have higher temperature requirements, while pests originating in the temperate zones can reproduce at lower temperatures. There are large differences in LDT not only among pest species (ranging from 1.4 oC in Acarus farris, to 22.8oC in Latheticus oryzae), but also among whole taxonomic groups (e.g. median of LDT for Acari = 6.28 oC, for Diptera = 8.0 oC, for Lepidoptera = 11.96oC, for Psocoptera = 13.0 oC, for Coleoptera = 14.15 _C, and for Blattodea = 15.05 oC). It is also emphasized the need for further research into the effects of low temperatures on storage and urban pests, as LDT values are missing for many important pest species.
