Genetic parameters were estimates from a five-trait animal model using VCE. Traits investigated were: ADGF average daily gain in the field test, LMF estimated lean meat content in the field test, NBA number of piglets born alive, NW number of piglets weaned, LWW litter weight at weaning (21 days of age). The following heritabilities (first number) and variance ratios for the hys-effect (second number) were estimated: ADGF: 0.26, 0.19; LMF: 0.54, 0.06; NBA: 0.08, 0.03; NW: 0.08, 0.03; LWW: 0.07, 0.07. The variance ratio for the litter effect was 0.12 for ADGF and 0.05 for LMF. The variance ratio for the permanent effect of the sow was 0.05 for NBA and NW and 0.07 for LWW.
