Concentrations of copper in muscles, liver, hair and faeces of rabbits fed granulated feed supplemented with 140 mg Cu/kg

  • Original language description

The supplementation of feed mixtures for rabbits with copper has been restricted by an EU directive to 35 mg/kg. In our experiment, quadruple concentration of Cu added to a feed as CuSO4.5H2O was used to investigate effect of Cu feeding on Cu concentration in muscles, liver, hair and faeces of Hyplus rabbits. The main ingredients of the basal feed lucerne meal (30%), wheat bran (22.5%), sunflower meal (17%), oats (9%), barley (8%), sugarbeet pulp (6%) and SBM (3%). Six rabbits, 35 days of age at the begat the beginning of the experiment, were fed control feed (containing 10 mg Cu/kg) and 6 rabbits were fed Cu-supplemented feed. Cu concentration in faeces was measured weekly. Rabbits were slaughtered at the age of 87 days. Copper in muscles, liver, hairand faeces was assayed by the atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The highest concentration of Cu was found in livers of Cu-fed rabbits: 118.5+31.8 mg/kg (4.6+0.5 mg/kg in controls). The concentration of Cu in meat of Cu-fed rabbits was
