Social organization seems to determine the occurrence of male infanticide in equids. No information about social organization of the maneless zebra (Equus burchelli borensis) has been available, but it was presumed the occurrence of infanticide would bethe same in all subspecies of plains zebra (Equus burchelli). It was found that the probability of a foal´s death was affected by the presence of a new male in the herd and by subspecies. All other subspecies showed male infanticide except for the maneless zebra, which suggests a different social system. This would also support the subspecific status of the maneless zebra.

Rozdíly ve výskytu samčí infanticidy mezi poddruhy zebry stepní (Equus burchelli)

Czech description

Výskyt samčí infanticidy u koňovitých je závislý na sociální organizaci. Předpokládali jsme existenci samčí infanticidy u všech zkoumaných poddruhů zebry stepní, přestože o sociální organizaci jednoho z nich ? zebry bezhřívé (Equus burchelli borensis) -není nic známo. Zjistili jsme, že pravděpodobnost úhynu hříběte byla ovlivněna přítomností cizího samce a poddruhem. Samčí infanticida byla nalezena u všech sledovaných poddruhů s výjimkou zeber bezhřívých. Naše výsledky ukazující absenci samčí infanticidy u zeber bezhřívých naznačují možnost odlišné sociální organizace těchto zeber a podporují tak dříve často zpochybňovaný poddruhový status zeber bezhřívých.
