The effect of age grouping on performance and health pair-housed calves

  • Original language description

The aim of this study was to determine the age (8, 16 or 31 days) suitable for grouping calves to a pair with regard to their growth and health. Calves housed in pair from 8th day of age had a significantly higher (p<0.05) live weight (LW) and not significantly higher average daily gain (ADG) than calves housed in pair from 16th (by +1.7 kg LW; 0.031 kg ADG) and 31st day of age (by +4.0 kg LW; 0.045 kg ADG). Calves moved to pair housing at 16 days of age had a significantly higher (p<0.05) occurrence of diarrhoea and not significantly higher occurrence of respiratory diseases. An earlier occurrence of diarrhoea and respiratory disease was found in calves housed in pair at the age of 16 days. Calves housed in pair at 31 days of age had significantly (p<0.01) shorter duration of respiratory diseases and not significantly shorter duration of diarrhoea.
