Effects of different housing systems on the occurrence of dairy calf diseases

  • Original language description

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of three different housing systems (individual, pair, group) on the occurrence of dairy calf diseases. The two-year study was performed on 48 calves housed individually, 48 calves in pairs, and 24 calves in groups of four. Monitored indicators during the experiment were the occurrence of diarrhoea and respiratory diseases, the first occurrence of the disease, the duration of illness, and the causative agent of diarrhoea. A significantly higher (p<0.05) occurrence of diarrhoea was found in group-reared calves. While the highest occurrence of respiratory diseases was recorded for both pairs and group-housed calves. An earlier occurrence of diarrhoea and respiratory disease was found in calves housed in groups. A significantly longer (p<0.05) duration of both diseases was proved in group-housed calves. Pair housing of calves increases the risk of respiratory disease, while group housing increases the risk of both diarrheal and respiratory disease in calves.
