Production of chitosan and chitin-glucan complex from waste Aspergillus niger biomass

  • Original language description

Chitin is present in the vast majority of fungi as the principal fibrillar polymer of the cell wall. Fungal mycelial wastes of the antibiotic of citric acid industry can become free and rich alternative sources of chitin - chitosanmaterials, beside the traditional industrial source - shellfish waste materials. Chitosan was extracted from Aspergillus niger mycelial waste biomass using a method developed of methods by Muzarelli and White et al. On applying this procedure reproducible yields of the acid souluble chitosan fraction and of the chitin-glucan fraction were obtained. Effects of a treatment of the mycelial biomass with a cellulase commercial preparation on the chitosan and chitin-glucan complex yields and their MW distribution were also tested.MW and degree of acetylation of the isolated fungal chitosan were determined.
