During the field part of the soil workshop, the participants were introduced in detail to the equipment that is necessary and recommended for collecting soil data. They learned how to install the ArcGIS Survey 123 application and the digital Soil Sampling Protocol form. The participants filled in the main data characterizing the entire surveyed plot step by step. They learned how to establish a research plot with the required design. They also learned how to determine individual soil properties of forest floor and mineral soil. Methods of taking soil samples by drilling and excavating of the profiles were discussed and practically demonstrated. The participants tried out a whole set of soil augers at two very contrasting sites. The Pouzdřany site represents an ecosystem where, due to the absence of rock fragments, samples can be taken by drilling. On the contrary, the soils at the Hádecká Planinka site were devoid of rock fragments. The participants at this location discussed the choice of Stony site design and local soil variability. The sterilization of equipment and the entire process of sampling eDNA samples, storage and transport of samples were discussed in detail. The workshop was supported by the project HORIZON – RIA 101081177: Effects of rewilding in forests and agricultural lands on carbon sequestration and diversity (WILDCARD), funded by Horizon Europe.
